Matteson, IL — Rich Township High School District 227 is proud to announce a remarkable increase in the number of students recognized as AP Scholars by the College Board. In 2025, 158 students earned the prestigious AP Scholar designation—triple the number from 2024, when 52 students achieved the honor.
The AP Scholar recognition is awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding achievement on Advanced Placement (AP) exams, showcasing their college readiness and commitment to academic excellence.
“Our goal has always been to create an environment where students are encouraged to push themselves academically,” said Linnea Garrett, Associate Principal of Educational Services. “We are so proud of our students for seizing these opportunities and excelling at such a high level,” added Paulette Grissett, Associate Principal of Educational Services.
The district has made significant investments in advanced coursework, including increasing AP offerings, providing targeted tutoring and exam preparation resources, and celebrating academic achievement through initiatives like the annual Future Ready Celebration.
“This growth reflects the dedication of our students, families, and teachers,” said Dr. Johnnie Thomas, Superintendent of District 227. “We’ve been intentional about expanding rigorous opportunities, supporting students in AP courses, and ensuring equitable access. Seeing our scholars rise to the challenge demonstrates what’s possible when high expectations meet the right supports.”
The increase in AP Scholars is part of the district’s broader mission to prepare students for college, career, and life after graduation. By excelling in rigorous courses, students not only earn college credit but also build the skills and confidence necessary to thrive in postsecondary education.
Board of Education President Andrea Bonds praised the accomplishment: “This milestone is more than just a number. It represents the hard work of our students, the vision of our educators, and the collective belief that Rich Township scholars are capable of excelling at the highest levels.”
