To help educate future leaders on local politics, Rich South High School’s Mock Trial Team was invited to attend the Village of Richton Park’s board meeting, as board members, Monday night.
Precisely 11 students traded places with the village's Board of Trustees and had hands-on experience in conducting a board meeting. During the meeting, students appointed the Planning & Zoning Commissioner, gave an overview of the 2019 fiscal year budget, heard business proposals of residents, and approved agenda items.
After exploring what it was like to operate the local government, one student says she felt relieved.
“I was very nervous because I did not know how it was going to go, but everyone made us feel comfortable,” said Dominique Franklin, junior at Rich South High School.
However, before attending the board meeting, Franklin was told that she would act as the Village President, Rick Reinbold. She admits Reinbold was very helpful with giving her tips on how to have a successful board meeting.
“Mr. Reinbold invited me to talk to him so that he could give me the ropes and help me out,” she said.
Franklin says she aspires to be an attorney one day and attending the board meeting helped her with public speaking.
