Holocaust Survivor Invited to Speak at Rich South High School

Matteson, IL—Rich Township High School District 227 is excited to announce that Holocaust survivor and author of Four Perfect Pebbles has been invited to speak at Rich South High School Thursday, December 7, 2017.

At the tender age of nine, Blumenthal was separated from her family and spent years living in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp (the same camp Anne Frank stayed prior to her death) in Germany. During her time in the concentration camp, Blumenthal has witnessed the torment of Jews, malnourishment and lived in deplorable conditions. After being freed by Allied troops, 13-years-old Blumenthal arrived to Peoria, Illinois, and was placed in the fourth grade where she learned to speak English for the first time.

Amy McDonagh, Language arts teacher and PBIS coach said her objective is to help students understand the social and emotional learning aspect of Blumenthal’s experience.

“The whole idea around it is just this message of kindness. How can we promote more kindness in our communities? How can we be more tolerant and accepting of different people and their beliefs?” McDonagh said.

As one of the Holocaust’s last generations, Blumenthal’s mission is to recount vivid memories of her experience, especially to young people. One student, who learned about the Holocaust in the eighth grade, said she is more than excited to meet some who has lived through such a tumultuous time.

“I am a person who is interested in historical events. So, when she [Ms. McDonagh] told me [Blumenthal] was coming I was really excited...I am really meeting somebody who has actually experienced this, instead of just knowing or reading about it," said Sharia Towner, freshman at Rich South High School.

The speaking engagement will begin at 1:45 p.m. sharp in Rich South High School’s auditorium.

To reserve a spot, please email Amy McDonagh at amcdonagh@rich227.org.
