Board President Betty Owens Honored as a Phenomenal Woman

Congratulations to District 227 Board of Education President, Betty Owens, who will be honored by the Reaching Back Foundation as a Phenomenal Woman during their Annual Awards Breakfast at the Beverly Woods Restaurant and Banquet Hall in Chicago on Saturday, April 28th from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Phenomenal Woman Award recognizes women who have made significant contributions to their community in the areas of business, education, philanthropy and religion. Owens, recently profiled in the Souththtown STAR, has worked in education for 33 years in various roles including teacher, principal and administrator, and has served for 11 years on the Board of Education.
“I believe our system of education can only be better if those of us who have been through it, are committed and involved and make them better,” she said. “It is our responsibility to help young people become well-educated and responsible citizens.”
In addition to Owens, the organization will recognize five other women, including Chicago Sun-Times Columnist Mary Mitchell and Rhonda McCullough Gilmore, the widow of the late comedienne/actor Bernie Mac, for her philanthropic work. Read the entire story here.
