Board of Education Meeting Highlights 

 

Rich East High School

Tuesday May 15, 2012 – 7:30 PM

 

Rich East Recognitions

The Rich East Booster Club was recognized. “This building does not run without this group being involved,” said Principal Kramer. “They’ve done a great job.” Board of Education student representative and student council president, Krystal Clayton was recognized. Krystal will attend Marquette University to study communications/public relations.

 

Rich South Recognitions

Rich South PTSO President, Yogi Ward and his executive team were recognized as, “leaders who support and encourage the students of Rich South,” said Principal Hudson. Board of Education student representative and student council president, Lavell Brown was recognized. Brown will attend the University of Illinois where he will study business and engineering technology.  

 

Rich Central Recognitions 

Rich Central PTSO President, Bettie McReynolds was recognized as a, “parent and community leader who is serious about student achievement,” said Principal Poole.  Board of Education student representative and student council president, Nia Green was recognized. Nia plans to attend the University of Illinois where she’ll study biology.

 

U.S. News & World Report Honor

Dr. Leak recognized Rich Central and Rich East for their recognition as One of America’s Best High Schools by U.S. News & World Report. This is the third time in four years that Rich East has been recognized and the first time that Rich Central has been recognized. Rich East was previously honored in 2009 and 2010.

 

Course Offerings for 2012-2013

Dr. Norrell and Dr. McDonald provided an overview of course offerings for the 2012-2013 school year. Rather than selecting seven classes, student will select six. Students will have access to 28 credits, rather than 24. We currently offer 270 courses including 55 AP/Honors courses. District 227 does not offer anything lower than college preparatory classes.

 

Financial Update

Mr. Hampton provided a financial update regarding pension funding legislation, funding from the State of Illinois and the administrative building relocation. The administrative office will relocate on May 31st with the first work date to begin on June 4th.  The purchase of the building adds $125,000 back into operating funds. Projected dollars remaining from building purchase are estimated at $290,000 which will be used to fund identified campus projects.

 

Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering (SECME) Update

Principal Kramer, Principal Hudson and Principal Poole provided an update on the SECME program at their campus. The SECME program promotes growth and exploration of math and science with a focus on careers in technology and engineering. Tavia Smith, Rich East valedictorian and SECME member, received a full engineering scholarship to Purdue University.

 

Graduation Ceremonies

Rich South, Rich East and Rich Central graduation ceremonies are this Sunday, May 20th, 2012 at the Tinley Park Convention Center. Rich South’s commencement will be held at 9:00 a.m., Rich East at 1:00 p.m., and Rich Central at 5:00 p.m.

 

New Administrative Structure

In conjunction with District 227 budget reductions, the total administrative staff structure has been reduced from 25 administrators to 19 administrators, a reduction of 24%.  

 

Race to the Top Grant

District 227 will receive $40,000 through the Race to the Top grant. The grant period runs from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2015.
