POLICY COMMITTEE MEETING
MARCH 19, 2007
The Policy Committee of the Board of Education of Rich Township High School District 227 met on March 19, 2007, in the Media Center at Rich East High School, Park Forest, Illinois.
Mrs. Norwood called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m.
Present: Norwood (Chair), Brookins (Member)
Also Present: Mr. Brunson, Mrs. Owens, Mrs. Moten (6:40 p.m.), Mr. Veazey, Mrs. Treichel, Mr. Hunigan
Mr. Hunigan the revised Policy 6.190 - Extracurricular and Co-Curricular Activities. The implementation section of the policy had been removed. The committee agreed with the revision.
Mr. Brunson brought up that he felt all students should be maintaining a 2.0 GPA. Mr. Hunigan responded that the Board needs to remember that some students are still struggling.
Mrs. Norwood brought up Policy 2.220 - audio/video conferencing with Board members. It was decided that Board members can attend only open meetings by audio or video conferencing. This change will be made to the policy.
The cell phone policy was discussed. It was decided that there was an enforcement issue with this policy. The cell phones need to be put away and not turned on during the day. There are consequences if this policy is not followed.
The committee went over revisions to the Policy Book received from the Illinois Association of School Boards.
Mrs. Brookins reminded the administration that the Board requested that the libraries be open until 5:00 p.m.
Mrs. Brookins added that class rank should be calculated on a semester basis, not yearly basis as noted on the proposed policy. Mr. Koutavas responded that rank is calculated at the semester level. The change will be made to the policy.
Mr. Brunson brought up a proposed policy regarding the next highest vote getter becoming a member of the Board of Education if an elected member resigns prior to being seated on the

Board. There was discussion on this proposed policy. It was the committee’s decision that the current policy should remain the way it is.
Mr. Veazey was recognized. He questioned the attire of faculty members. He said they are not setting an example for students.
Mr. Hunigan noted he would research this and bring back policies from other districts.
Mr. Cohn suggested that the expectations extend to the students also.
Mrs. Brookins noted that at the next meeting the Committee needed to consider policies for student activity accounts.
Mr. Hunigan reminded the committee of the hiring of veterans policy to be considered.
At 7:25 p.m. the meeting was adjourned.
